With the weather more befitting a Caribbean summers day, Seaford 3s made the long and eventful trip to Groombridge to play Linden Park 4s.
Seaford won the toss and with a pitch still slightly soft from the weeks weather elected to bowl first. An early wicket for Jon Robards (1-21) pegged Linden Park back, but, they recovered to 48-2. An interesting spell from Jonny Brown (2-24) wielded two wickets, but also many extras as just 5 runs came off the bat in his 5 over spell. 53-4 soon became 86-4 before Seaford turned to the youngsters Sam Mullett (2-15) and Oscar Miller (2-11) and between them ripped through the middle order with some excellent bowling. Rob Gravett (2-3) finished off the tail, but his match had much more to come.
Linden Park finished at 105 all out. No batsman scored more than 20, S Deane (19) top scoring, but extras managed 34 with only 1 bye. An area that certainly needs working at.
In reply the Seaford openers got off to a flyer with Rob Gravett (68) continuing his great start to the season, launched the ball from one end to all parts of the ground. Whilst at the other end J Hoare (4-17) bowled beautifully and when he took the first wicket with the score on 50, he hadn't yet conceded a run. His eventual 4 wickets were fully deserved. Not to be out done by his son's eye catching innings, James Gravett (0 ret) had his own eye catching moment top edging a sweep causing a nasty cut above the eye forcing him to retire hurt. A good moment to mention why helmets are such a valuable piece of a batters armour. When Rob Gravett was finally amusingly out twice in one ball, bowled off an edge caught by the keeper, Seaford were 83-3 and surely all but there.
The impressive Hoare had other ideas and two wickets in two balls assisted by A Spear, who conceded just two runs in 5 overs, made it a nervous last 20 runs. Seaford finally getting home with 5 wickets spare.
A mention must go to young E Prescott who bowled some excellent balls in a tricky time to bowl.
A good game, once again played in the right spirit.
