Rye 3rd XI 218-8 40 Overs beat Seaford 4th XI 154-10 by 64 runs

Struggles with availability, mean’t that Seaford 4th XI went into the game with one of their youngest line ups for a long time with seven Under 13 players and four ‘old hands’.

This was compounded when two of the players were delayed due to a successful morning football tournament led to Seaford fielding with nine players for 35 overs.

To the youngsters credit, they fielded really well with the highlights being Laurie Weisz’s stunning catch in the gulley and Cosmo Martin’s catch over his head at mid off. The Saunders boys were the most successful bowlers, Jon taking 3-30 and Jac 3-43 as Rye made 218-8 off their 40 overs thanks mainly to Martin Blincow’s 71.

In reply, with Seaford 80-2 after 15 overs with Richard Drayton 35 going well with his new ‘old’ bat and Jon Saunders 23, Seaford were on course for an unlikely victory. Unfortunately 80-2 became 104-7 and despite stand in skipper Simon Pitts 24 not out and a spirited effort from Simon Lewis, who together put on 34 for the last wicket, they ended up 64 short with still 8 overs to spare.

A really good effort in the field by the youngsters, who kept their heads up but in the end Seaford were lacking a couple of experienced batters who could have made the game close. A very enjoyable game where the youngsters on both sides all got a game and it was played in a great spirit.
