Could Do Better, But Not Much Wetter

Seaford 3s made the trip to Herstmonceux 2s with once again a side short of numbers, and came home with their tails between their legs as they were soundly beaten.

Seaford won the toss and elected to field first. A tight opening spell from Steve Hearsey (1-16) and Ben Edmonds (2-20) kept things in check and after 12 overs Herstmonceux stood at 30-1. Jon Brown (4-33) backed up the good start with an excellent opening few overs. Just after drinks Herstmonceux were 68-5 and looking like Seaford would be chasing a low score. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the Seaford team as too many loose balls were punished by the lower order marshalled by the superb S.Headey (93) who fell to a great ball from youngster Callum Hall making his senior debut. However by then the damage was done and a few late blows and wickets falling ended Herstmonceux's innings on 179. To be honest it looked like 150 would be a very good score in the conditions and so it proved.

In reply a wicket in the first over never helps, Jon Brown being bowled by M.Galitzine (1-12) who bowled really well all innings. A good but slow recovery between Martin Edmonds (25) and Skipper Gavin Wright (17) moved the score to 49 before Edmonds fell. Just 7 runs came from overs 11-17 with the tight bowling of V.Singh (1-32) along with P.Sandalls (6-20) who gave nothing away and fully deserved his figures. The escalating run rate along with the regular wickets falling meant that Seaford were never really in the hunt, with only George Hayden (24) showing much fight. To be honest the lack of urgency to score runs was quite concerning, and Seaford whimpered to a heavy defeat ending on 103.

It must be said however that both teams deserve credit for battling through some pretty nasty rain and bad light, just stopping once for about 15 mins when the rain was really just too heavy.
