With the hot weather showing no sign of relenting, Seaford made the short trip to Selmeston in the first of the 40-40 games.
Selmeston won the toss and elected to bat on a good track and in the height of the heat. In form T. Marriott fell without scoring to give Seaford an early lift, but couldn't make the most of that oppournity. A Deighton (65) held the innings together whilst M.Butcher (46), E Springett (38) and T Deighton (57no) plundered runs for fun, making the most of a tiring bowling attack and fielders showing signs of the heat. All in all, another bad day at the office for the bowlers.
After an extended tea break to watch the second half of the football, Seaford set about their innings. Tight bowling and good fielding restricted Seaford's runs, and although Seaford reached 73-1 after 21 overs with Gavin Wright (28) and Mark McCaughan (35) it was slow going and the run rate required was shooting up fast. With a lack of a "heavy hitter" the middle and tail end had no answer to the run rate, and soon became a face saving exercise to see how many bonus points they could grab. Marshalled by the excellent Ella McCaughan (42no) showing maturity beyond her years, added with some "tip and run" cricket from the tail mean't Seaford scored 30 off the last 5 overs and ended on 161-8.
A Deighton (3-33) and E
Springett (2-24) capping off a great all round day for them and Selmeston as a whole, who played excellently.
Seaford were definitely second best in all areas today, a lot to work on and must quickly learn how to play the 40-40 games
Selmeston 30pts- Seaford 9pts
