Accents And Spin Send Seaford To The Win

Seaford Sunday side made the short trip to Lewes Priory and were welcomed by Priory Ruins on a very hot and humid day.

As always with Seaford the toss was lost and were asked to bat. Opening pair Jon Saunders (77ret) and Josh Pride (77ret) set off at a phenominal rate of knots, helped with some friendly bowling and quickly rattled up their half centurys and at the drinks break at 16 overs, both retired with the score at 161-0. Some much needed runs for our resident Aussie, who batted faultlessly matched with the power of the welsh rugby legend Jon. It has to be said that Jon benefitted from some unfortunate dropped catches. I have a feeling the home side wont want to see those again... Once the openers had departed, normal service returned and the scoring became much more sedate. An excellent 15 from Richard Evans on debut was the shining moment in the rest of the Seaford innings. Wickets fell at regular intervals and Seaford's Skipper declared their innings on 220-6 after 31 of the 35 allotted overs. P.Lunt (3-19) taking the bowling plaudits along with Arwin James (1-11) with a very economical spell.

In reply Priory Ruins got off to a good start, and after 5 overs the score was past 30. Helped somewhat by Ben Browns inability to make use of the facilities, he was also deprived of a wicket that he never would have deserved with a dropped catch at slip (yeah, that was me, sorry Ben) Jac Saunders (2-34) bowled well and made the breakthrough with a well taken caught and bowled. Ruins took the score to 70-1 when Skipper Zak Hearsey decided correctly that taking the pace off the ball was the way to go. From then on, wickets fell very regularly and were shared around. Zak Hearsey (2-8), Jon Milham (1-12), Simon Pitts (3-2), Josh Pride (1-10) and Will Lucas (1-8) all took wickets with slow "spin" bowling. The returning Jac Saunders finished things off and Ruins ended on 114 all out after 28.2 overs. In true "village" fashion Ben Brown fielding on the boundary enjoying the liquid refreshments offered by the victorious 20-20 side who came to watch us after their win earlier.

Today was a day that sunday cricket was designed for. Everyone went home having partaken in the game, no one took the Matt Lever "TFC" award.
