On a baking hot summers day at Groombridge a football match impacted on Seaford 2s as they were asked to bowl first against Linden Park 3s. The scoreboard soon started ticking over a bit to quickly for Seaford's liking reaching 40 in quick time before the first wicket went down, the returning Ben Harvey making the breakthrough with a fine low catch from Jon Brown. Ben Edmonds then got his first second team wicket rearranging the stumps in doing so. Linden Park were always around 5 an over with the quick out field and a few to many extras, Rob Gravett also grabbed his first second team wickets as well as a fine nine over spell in the searing heat, he bagging 2-42. The main wicket taker on the day was the returning from injury Deiniol Cummins with a quality spell of off spin getting him 3-36. Top score for the hosts was Anson with 48.
On a boiling day it was hard to maintain concentration with the pub opposites roof coming off twice as the goals went in in Russia, Seaford's fielding gave away a few runs which proved crucial to the outcome of this game.
Seaford's run chase started powerfully with a few boundaries but two excellent catches sent Rob Gravett (13) and Jon Pitts (6) back to the shade of the clubhouse early doors. Some rebuilding from Oscar Weisz (12) and Deiniol Cummins (28) saw Seaford thru 50 before wickets started to tumble at regular intervals. Owen Edmonds, with his maiden second team fifty and Richard Cummins (28) kept Seaford in with a chance, before being further reduced to 170-9. Some last wicket entertainment from Ben Edmonds and Ben Harvey got Seaford up to 194 and 18 points, a good return but again another loss.
An excellent effort by all 11 players on a really sweltering day. The ever changing make-up of the team is really impacting on results. Hopefully next week will see the return of seem familiar faces to get us back into winning ways.
