1s Lose Nail Biter in Another Tough Week for Club!

Another tough weekend for the club! All 3 teams gave it a good effort but couldn’t get over the line. The 1s lost a nail-biter on the last ball by 1 wkt against Brighton & Hove CC 2nd XI, the 2s & 3s chased large totals bravely away from home but in the end ran out of steam.

1st XI Match Report

The 1st XI won the toss and elected to bat on a very dry and dusty wicket. Things didn’t get off to a good start with both openers going in quick time to leave them in trouble on 17-2. A series of small middle order partnerships and starts from the batsmen kept the score ticking over at roughly 3 runs an over. But a consistent loss of wickets made it very difficult to put the foot down towards the end of the innings. Seaford finished on 182-9 from their 53 overs, O Smith top scored with 39.

The teams then returned to the field after a short break. The Brighton innings followed a similar pattern to the first. Early wickets from M Sapwell (2/69) reduced Brighton to 5-2 but a partnership of 60 between G Williamson (30) & D Hemblade (42) moved Brighton to 65-2. A wicket just before the break from Z Hearsey gave Seaford a much needed momentum boost going into the long Football break!

After the break, Seaford started slowly and Brighton capitalised, taking the score onto 91-3 before Seaford finally woke up and made the breakthrough. Wickets then began to tumble, with M Wright claiming figures of 3/36 and Z Hearsey (3/30) picking up two more wickets. At 128-8 Seaford were in the driving seat, but had to keep focused to finish the job. J Wilkins (34) provided some stubborn resistance for Brighton but when he was caught on the boundary the score read 149-9, and the game turned back in Seaford’s favour. However it turned again as the 10th wicket partnership between D Mates (11*) and K Buck (25) steered Brighton home off of the last ball of the game.

A great game of cricket but extremely tough to take for Seaford who worked hard to rectify their below par batting performance and errors in the field.

They will have to pick their heads up and go again next week away to Hastings Priory 2s, with a number of players returning to the squad.
